Politics should be a vehicle for service, development, and the advancement of the people’s welfare. Unfortunately, a disturbing trend known in local parlance as “Use-and-Dump Politics” has become increasingly prevalent in many communities, particularly within Imo West Senatorial District and more visibly in Orlu, Orsu, and Oru-East Federal Constituency.This unhealthy political culture involves the deliberate manipulation of individuals, especially youths, for political gain. During election seasons and political campaigns, promises are made, loyalties are sought, and countless young people are mobilized with assurances of empowerment, inclusion, and opportunities. However, once the political objective is achieved, many of these same individuals are abandoned, forgotten, and left to face the realities of unemployment, poverty, and disappointment.The greatest victims of this practice are often gullible youths and those who may not fully understand the long-term consequences of being used as political tools. Some are encouraged to engage in political confrontations, spread propaganda, or dedicate their time and resources to political causes, only to discover later that they were merely instruments in the pursuit of personal ambitions.This trend is not only unfair but also dangerous. It breeds frustration, destroys trust in leadership, discourages genuine political participation, and undermines the future of our young people. A society where politicians remember the people only when they need votes, crowds, or political support cannot experience sustainable development.The people must therefore become more politically conscious and vigilant.
Our youths must learn to ask critical questions: What is the track record of those seeking our support? What have they done for the community? How have they empowered the people before seeking another mandate? Are they interested in our welfare or merely our usefulness?Political support should never be given blindly. It should be based on competence, integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the development of the people. Every citizen must resist attempts to be used and discarded after elections or political battles.The time has come for the people of Orlu, Orsu, Oru-East, and indeed the entire Imo West Senatorial District to reject use-and-dump politics. We must demand leaders who value people beyond election periods, leaders who see citizens as partners in development rather than tools for political convenience.A politically aware population is difficult to deceive. Let us remain vigilant, informed, and united in protecting our collective future. The era of being used and abandoned must come to an end.The people are not political tools. The people are the purpose of leadership.
