The political upheaval in Rivers State today took a more dramatic twist as Governor Fubara was denied access into State Assembly Complex, certainly the Ides of March look to swallow the embattled Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State. Barely 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu tried mediating by asking all parties in the crisis to obey the rule of Law. Governor Fubara faced a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, as he was locked out of the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex. Security personnel barred his entry, citing the absence of official communication regarding his visit. The undaunted, Fubara countered this claim, stating that he had notified Speaker Martins Amaewhule through a letter and follow-up calls since Tuesday.
This development further complicates the ongoing political turbulence in the state. Recall the recent directive by the President to both parties to implement the Supreme Court’s February 28 judgment mandating fresh local government elections slated for August 9, 2025. It is also important to state here the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, had invited lawmakers for a meeting on March 10 to discuss the 2025 budget and peace efforts.There has been series of controversies surrounding the Assembly. The legislative chamber was recently demolished after being deemed structurally unsafe due to an explosion and fire incident. The state government has approved a ₦19.6 billion reconstruction project for the complex.
