In what seemed like a gestapo thriller scene, Fulani herdsmen resumed attacks in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, killing at least three people in Mgbuji autonomous community, as the he whereabout of one native is still unknown as he is said to be missing after the attack. Reliable community sources said the victims were farmers who were attacked on their farms. Ogenyi Samuel, one of the community leaders lamented the attack and pointed out that the community is worried about the senseless attacks and killings, stating “we are tired and despondent. The government only mobilises security agents after every attack to collect corpses, but they don’t do anything to prevent the attacks or engage the assailants.”
Collaborating the general feelings of his people, another community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, bemoaned the attack, stating that three corpses had been recovered and deposited in the morgue. He further pointed out that one person is missing, and a search party has been launched. The community leader expressed frustration, saying, “Our people are already tired and despondent because you don’t know when the assailants will come. It’s like a guerrilla war now, we have a large farm concentration, and when you think you have secured one side, the assailants will launch an attack through another area.” He praised the bravery of some of the youths who gallantly fought back. According to him several people would have been killed if the gunshots had penetrated their bodies.
He highlighted that, “It is true that three people were killed yesterday, being Monday, in Mgbuji. The victims went to their farms and were attacked and killed. One person is still missing as we speak. A search party has been launched since last night. Three corpses have been recovered and are already deposited in the morgue. “Among those killed is one man called Isaiah in Otu-Mgbuji. I don’t know the names of the other two, but one is the son of Emmanuel Ogbodo. Last Friday, the herders had attacked another person in the same farm, although he escaped, they took his motorcycle. His escape was just a miracle because they had already caught and macheted him. “Since the government promised to send 150 personnel comprising the military, police, DSS, Air Force, and Civil Defence to the farm to be combing the area after the women protested in March, about three months now, nobody has gone to that place. The herdsmen are still occupying the settlements and launching attacks from there on the farmers.”
“Our local government chairman, Mr. Obiora Obeagu, is also not helping matters. The soldiers and policemen that were already in Eha-Amufu, who accepted that they would be combing the bushes periodically, the Council Chairman is not helping them by giving them fuel to go there. According to him; “The people are tired, and they have resigned their fate to God “What is now happening is that after the people have been killed, the government will start mobilising security personnel to go and carry their corpses. After the killings, the job of the security will be to go and carry the corpses. Since the women protested, the attack hasn’t stopped, but this is the first time the herders will be killing people after the protest.”
They have been attacking people and dispossessing them of their belongings,” He said The recent attack is just after three months the women from seven autonomous communities in Eha-Amufu carried out a protest against incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen, which have resulted in the killings of hundreds of farmers and raping of women since 2021. Recall that at least 152 persons have been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Eha-Amufu between 2021 and March 2025. Over 49 kidnapped cases have also been recorded, with about 20 persons still missing from several attacks.The community leaders have called on the government to take concrete actions to prevent further attacks and protect the lives of the people. All attempt and efforts made to reach the Council Chairman, Obiora Obeagu, for comment on the recent attack were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls, and a text message sent to him.Similarly, the Enugu State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the incident. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, was unreachable, as he did not take calls or respond to a text message seeking his reaction.
