The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the release of the abducted Anambra State Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Daniel Onyishi, who regained freedom ten days after his abduction by kidnappers. Mr. Onyishi was kidnapped in the early hours of Wednesday, June 12, 2025, along Winner Road in Awka, the Anambra state capital. His release was, however, officially confirmed in statement on Sunday, June 22, by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. In a release signed by the Police Spokesman, he said:,” the rescue of the NDLEA boss was as a result of an aggressive and intelligence-driven operation involving the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.”
He further pointed out that the operation was carried out by a high-powered covert team of the NDLEA, led by Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, the Zonal Commander of NDLEA Zone 12, whose efforts were pivotal in ensuring the safe return of Mr. Onyishi. SP Ikenga confirmed that the NDLEA boss is now in safe custody and is currently receiving medical attention. However, the Police did not disclose the precise circumstances or location of his release. The Police Spokesman reassured the public of their ongoing efforts to apprehend those responsible for the abduction.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has reportedly briefed the Inspector-General of Police on the successful return of Mr. Onyishi and activated directives from the Force Headquarters to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.The Command expressed the appreciation of the Nigerian Police Force on the strategic collaboration and synergy with sister security agencies, while also reiterating its commitment to the protection of lives and property in the state. He reiterated that no effort will be spared in fishing out and prosecuting all individuals connected to the crime.
