The Federal House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations in continuation of their oversight function visited Tincan Island Port Command on Wednesday 5th November 2025 . The committee during the visit urged the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), to maintain heightened vigilance to ensure that substandard and harmful products do not find ways into the country. The Federal House Committee delegates visit to Tincan Island Port Command is aimed at ensuring that Customs operations align with global best practices and uphold national safety standards. Comptroller Frank Onyeka in charge of Tincan Island Port Command in his address highlighted Nigeria Custom Service mandate to prioritise national security and facilitate legitimate trade. “In Tincan Island Port, we prioritise national security, trade facilitation, then revenue generation. Our activities are guided by the Customs Act, which mandates us to ensure that what is declared is what is seen, and that proper duties are paid promptly.”
The CAC disclosed that Tincan Island Port Command Command has maintained a strong inter-agency collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure effective cargo checks and timely intervention whenever consignments are suspected to contain harmful or substandard products.According to Comptroller Onyeka: “In situations where we suspect a cargo contains anything that might harm society, we invite the appropriate authorities and we have sustained this progressive synergy till date”, he noted” The leader of the House Committee, Honourable David Zacharias, commended the Command for its efforts, describing the visit as a crucial step toward strengthening safety compliance across Nigeria’s trade corridors.“We understand that protecting our communities against substandard products is a joint responsibility. The safety of Nigerians is non-negotiable, and we must all do our best to uphold that”, he stated. Honourable members of the Committee took turns to point out their recommendations on strategies to curb the circulation of unsafe goods and called for continued collaboration between government agencies and port stakeholders to safeguard the nation’s borders.
