The Imo State Commissioner for Transport Hon. Emeka Okoronkwo, has commended Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma for reconstruction and expansion of roads in Imo State Speaking with Journalists at the State Secretariat recently in Owerri, Imo State he expressed appreciation to transport workers across the state for their improved compliance with road regulations and their growing dedication to passenger safety.He noted that he has seen evidence of discipline among transport workers and urged them to step up their safety practices as the festive season approaches, a time often characterised by increased vehicle movement and higher passenger traffic. Addressing representatives of various transport unions, the Commissioner urged senior officers to continue guiding and educating their drivers on responsible behaviour on the road, stressing that the safety of passengers must always remain their foremost duty.
He highlighted the need for routine vehicle checks, especially tyre inspections, before trips within and outside the state. “Please remind your drivers that their main responsibility is to make sure every passenger arrives safely. We must place life and safety above every other consideration,a successful journey is one that begins well and ends with everyone unharmed.”Hon. Okoronkwo further affirmed the Ministry’s readiness to receive complaints, observations, and suggestions aimed at promoting peace, order, and overall effectiveness in the transport sector. He stated that continued cooperation remains essential to sustaining the achievements recorded so far.Responding, the State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Hon. Jeff Eze, thanked the Commissioner for his proactive efforts toward improving transportation safety in the state.
He pledged the full support of the union and assured that an emergency meeting would be convened to convey the Commissioner’s message to the drivers and transport workers across the union.In a related development, the government of Imo State, under the leadership of Senator Hope Uzodimma has continued to receive commendation for reforms currently taking place in the transport sector.The coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Digital Economy and E-Government in overseeing the registration, revalidation, painting, and fleet management of commercial vehicles have been described as a major achievement in improving transport administration.The initiative, which introduces a standardised identity system for commercial vehicles, is designed to enhance security, strengthen compliance, and promote the safety of both commuters and drivers.Residents across the state have also praised the Governor for the extensive road reconstruction and expansion projects that are changing the outlook of the state. The improved road network has eased movement, reduced travel time, and boosted business activities, particularly in areas previously affected by poor road conditions.The Ministry of Transport has restated its commitment to upholding these improvements while ensuring that transport operators consistently apply best practices in service delivery.
