Half of this year, 2026 in so many ways is seen to have recorded remarkable improvement in the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN),.The authority from the much we know has intensified efforts in many areas of its statutory functions especially in modernising the airport infrastructure, beefing of operational standards and in all, improvement of passenger experience across all the airport in the country.Much as many of its critical projects remain under implementation, the period in review has provided a clearer indication where the Authority is driving the Nigeria’s airport system.Upon assumption of office, more than two years ago, FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, has intensified efforts in the pursuit of reforms aimed at repositioning the nation’s airports to meet growing passenger need in line with international best practices.However, air passengers, locally and internationally are yet to enjoy the full benefits of these initiatives because of the scale of ongoing infrastructure renewal which reflects a planned long-term strategy rather than isolated interventions.The authority’s reform agenda became particularly feasible during the second quarter of 2026. This essentially is due to the increasing expectations for safer, better, smarter and more efficient airports. FAAN accelerated projects mainly focused on infrastructure rehabilitation, digital transformation, operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.One of the periods most significant achievement was FAAN’s attainment of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) TrainAir Plus Gold membership which certifies that the Authority’s aviation training programmes now meet internationally recognised standards.
For the stakeholders, this milestone was long expected due to what the current management has put in place since it came onboard.Within same period also infrastructure renewal remained the focal point of FAAN’s activities. The ongoing rehabilitation of the old international terminal at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, speaks volume and is expected to significantly improve passenger comfort and operational efficiency through upgraded cooling and ventilation systems, improved plumbing, redesigned waiting areas, enhanced security installations and a comprehensive facelift in and out of the terminal building Upon completion it is expected that, the project should substantially impact positively on the experience of passengers using the airport.FAAN too, during the period advanced its digital transformation agenda with the introduction of the GoCashless Card initiative. Besides, implementation suffered some glitches which is still being addressed, the platform is designed to minimise cash transactions, block leakages and also enhance revenue accountability aswell as improve financial transparency and provide passengers with seamless payment options across airport facilities, without delays that were experienced in the past.Beside, ground transportation reforms equally received adequate attention within this period also.
FAAN’s decision to introduce higher standards for airport taxi operators and vehicles aims to improve safety, professionalism and passenger confidence already has gained ground. All these, implementation were adjusted to curry other players adequate time to comply for the fact that, the reforms demonstrate the authority’s recognition that passenger experience matters at all time and everywhere. FAAN from the grapevine is also said to have invested in critical operational upgrades, including improvements to safety systems, security infrastructure, air-conditioning facilities and other essential utilities. Meanwhile, the progress recorded during the first half of 2026 should be seen within the context of ongoing implementation even as indication shows that more milestone would be recorded as time wores on.Nigeria’s aviation sector in the past grappled with delayed infrastructure projects, inconsistent funding and maintenance deficits but the coming of the first woman ever Mrs Kuku as the MD/CEO, FAAN must therefore ensure that the momentum generated in the first half of 2026 is sustained through disciplined execution, adequate funding and institutional continuity.No doubt, the authority’s mid-year performance reflects an agency that is increasingly focused on long-term transformation rather than short-term interventions measures hitherto experienced in the past viz; Infrastructure renewal, digital innovation, workforce development, operational excellence, international certification and customer service have all emerged as the defining pillars of the on-going reform agenda. However, in aviation what is required is sustainable and implementable policies designed to advance the growth and development of the system.The height attained by FAAN in its sphere of operation currently demands the support of every stakeholders so that it can do more now that a Daniel(mrs Kuku) is on the judgement throne.
