In a rare development in the history of Nigeria aviation story, the United Nigeria Airlines has unveiled two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft, named after two prominent Igbo sons: the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, and the late literary renowned, Professor Chinua Achebe. The unveiling took place yesterday, been thursday, 18th June, 2026. It was unique a occasion not necessarily framed around capacity growth, route expansion and operational efficiency but essentially speaks directly to Nigeria’s cultural identity.In his welcome address during the event, Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof Obiora Okonkwo said that, the audience was gathered at the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA) venue of the event, to celebrate a heritage, while celebrating a fortune of Nigeria’s aviation. Prof Okonkwo who explained the airline’s resolve to name the aircraft after both Achebes, said the nomenclature signals a deliberate effort to position itself not merely as a transporter of passengers but also as a custodian and promoter of good Nigerian heritage.The UNA boss, Professor Obiora who also hails from the same Ogidi community as late Chinua Achebe in Anambra State, noted that, the foremost writer remains one of Africa’s most influential literary voices.
Through works such as “Things Fall Apart”, Okonkwo stressed that Achebe introduced African stories to a global audience and challenged upcoming generations to appreciate the depth and complexity of African history and civilisation. His writings, he continued helped to shape global perceptions and understanding of Nigeria and Africa, making him not just a literary figure of all times, but a cultural ambassador. On the industry, Okonkwo said airline operations in Nigeria remain extremely challenging, stating the high cost of training personnel abroad, disruptions caused by aircraft unserviceability and the financial losses arising whenever flights are cancelled.“In the last three months, the industry may have lost N10 billion occasioned by the disruptions in air travel though not peculiar to Nigeria”, Okonkwo said. He noted that carriers often have to reposition aircraft from overseas at huge expense to maintain schedules and protect passengers from prolonged delays and disruptions, adding that such developments make fleet expansion necessary.The airline boss urged the Federal Government to allow aviation agencies retain more of the revenue generated by the sector rather than remitting greater part of it to the federation account. On Nnaemeka Achebe, Okonkwo explained that, the Obi of Onitsha represents continuity, leadership, tradition and the enduring relevance of indigenous institutions in contemporary Nigeria.

He has examplified good leadership and Onitsha has continued to flourish under his leadership”. Responding, the monarch said “I am overwhelmed. We thank God for a day like this. It is a day of gratitude. I am really overwhelmed for two reasons. First is because my name is there. Secondly, my name was inscribed in the aircraft alongside Chinua Achebe”.Achebe said, he has benefited so much, sharing same surname with Chinua Achebe, saying “I have been assigned his seats in the aircraft and Hotel rooms in his name”. For the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Barr Festus Keyamo (SAN), he congratulated United Nigeria Airlines for the new acquisition. The Minister said, one thing his administration did on resumption of office was to ensure they got the policies right so as to support local airlines which is their focusCommending Air Peace for showing good example in aircraft lease arrangements, Keyamo said “Since we came on board, banks are now financing aircraft leases to the highest. If Allen of Air Peace had defaulted on any of his leases, no other airline in Nigeria can get aircraft. Air Peace runs on the most responsible book keeping in the sector”.The Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti who unveiled both aircraft on his part commended the United Nigeria Airlines for the aircraft acquisition and urged the airline s management to continue on professional excellency trajectory in the aviation sector.
